What a registered agent does

A registered agent is the person or company named on your state filing to receive legal papers and official mail for the LLC during business hours. You can usually serve as your own agent if you have an address in the state and are there to receive papers; a service does it for a yearly fee and keeps your home address off the filing.

ZenBusiness puts the typical cost of a registered agent service at $100 to $300 a year1. Its own price is $99 plus state fees for the first year and $199 a year after1. Bizee charges $149 a year standalone and includes the first year free when it forms your LLC2.
