Guide: registered agents
Updated October 25, 2026
A registered agent costs two things: what the state charges to designate one (usually nothing, Florida $25) and what a service charges per year to be one ($99 to $249 for the first year on the pages we read). Both, state by state and service by service.
Florida Division of Corporations and provider pages, read Oct 14, 2026. See source

Read from each state's own fee page or form on October 14, 2026. 'No separate agent fee listed' means the page we read lists none; the agent is named inside the formation filing.
| State | Agent fee at formation | Later change of agent | Formation filing fee, for reference | Who may be the agent, per the state |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Florida1 | $25.00, required | $25.00 | $100.00 (total $125.00 with the agent fee) | A business with an active Florida filing, or an individual; physical Florida street address; the LLC cannot be its own agent |
| Wyoming3 | No separate agent fee listed | $5.00 (Appointment of New Registered Agent and Office) | $100.00 | Not stated on the fee schedule; a commercial agent's annual registration is $50.00 |
| Delaware4 | No separate agent fee listed | $50.00 (Change of Agent Only Amendment) | $110.00 | An individual resident or an entity authorized in Delaware, with a physical street address; a business may be its own agent only if physically located in Delaware |
| Texas8 | No separate agent fee listed; filing the agent's consent (Form 401-A) is $15 | $15 (Form 401) | $300 | An individual Texas resident or an entity registered in Texas; physical Texas address, not a mailbox service; written consent |
| California10 | No separate agent fee listed | Not stated by the source | $70.00 (online only) | Not stated by the source |
| New York11 | No separate agent fee listed; the form designates the Secretary of State as agent for service of process | Not stated by the source | $200 | The form names the Secretary of State; the page we read does not describe an additional agent |

The agent is the person or company that accepts legal papers for the LLC at an address in the state of formation. Florida: "The registered agent must have a physical street address in Florida. (Do not list a P.O. Box address.)" and "An entity cannot serve as its own registered agent. However, an individual or principal associated with the business may"2. Delaware: the agent "may be either an individual resident or business entity that is authorized to do business in the State of Delaware" and "must have a physical street address in Delaware"5; agents are not regulated by the state and must consent before the filing7.
Texas: "an individual Texas resident or a domestic entity, or a foreign entity that has qualified or registered to transact business in Texas", at "a physical address in Texas where the registered agent can be personally served with process during business hours", which "cannot solely be the address of a mailbox service or telephone answering service"9. New York's form takes a different route: Article THIRD designates the Secretary of State as the agent on whom process may be served, with a mailing address for forwarding11.

If you live in the state and keep business hours at a street address there, you can usually be the agent and pay the state only: $25 in Florida, nothing extra in the other five13481011. Florida lets "an individual or principal associated with the business" serve but not the LLC itself2; Delaware lets the business be its own agent only if it is physically located in Delaware5; Texas wants an individual Texas resident or a registered entity9.
An owner outside the state, and especially outside the US, does not meet those address rules, so the agent is a service. That is the yearly price in the second table, on top of the state's fee. The address also matters for what the state can send: Delaware's tax page says notices that do not come directly from the State or the entity's registered agent should be viewed suspiciously6.
The agent satisfies the state. The IRS issues the EIN free; from abroad, apply by phone at 267-941-1099 or by faxing Form SS-4, and the new EIN can be used right away to open a bank account21. FinCEN's 2026 final rule exempts entities created in the United States from beneficial ownership reporting; foreign-formed companies registered in a US state remain reporting companies unless exempt22. The routes are on US LLC for non-residents and EIN without an SSN; the state pages are Florida, Texas and Delaware.

$99 to $249 for the first year and $99 to $249 on renewal on the six provider pages read today; Bizee and Inc Authority include the first year with a formation order12131415161819.
Not in Florida or Texas, in their own words29; Delaware requires a street address and an office open during business hours7.
Not without a street address in the state; Texas also requires an individual agent to be a Texas resident9. A service with an in-state address meets the rule.
No. The state pages are linked in the sources; for your own situation, talk to an attorney you choose.

Prices and state fees are what the named source published on the date we read it. The state's own filing office and the provider's own page are the final word on fees and terms.
